A Wedding Registry Question

I have a question for all of you and I would honestly love your opinions. I posted this on Facebook yesterday and within 20 minutes I had a spirited debate raging on my wall.

Is it a bad idea to give a bride & groom a gift for their wedding or shower that they did NOT register for?

The reason I ask is because I've come across something that I think would make a really lovely and unique gift, but it's not the type of thing you can register for. It's personal, personalized (meaning monogrammed!), and different - I don't know of many people who own one but it's the type of thing I personally would love to receive as a gift, even if I didn't know I even wanted one!

I don't want to say what the item in question is, because I know for a fact a lot of my friends whose upcoming weddings and showers I'm attending read this blog, and I don't want to ruin the surprise...

When I first posed the question on Facebook, the general consensus was that it's okay to buy something not on a registry, as long as there is a gift receipt included so the couple can return it, or to just stick to the registry. But once I explained that the item in question was monogrammed, the tides seemed to turn, and many friends wrote in favor of surprising the couple with something personal and personalized, which is kind of what I thought all along, so I think I'm going to go with my gut and do it!

Many of you who read this blog are either engaged or married so I would love to hear your thoughts on this subject! Thanks in advance!

  1. I say go for it; it's the thought that counts, right? The thought behind this gift is far more than selecting something from their registry.

  2. Do it!!! I loved getting things from our registries but the surprises of personalized gifts are the best! And if it is something you know they will love/use, DO IT!!! Xoxo

P.s. see you in a few weeks!!

  4. We received these for our wedding, and I just LOVE them. Our friend that purchased them for us also bought the scotch decanter which we HAD registered for. I really like the idea of buying an off-registry gift as a supplement for a registry gift - like these. For a friend, I got her bakeware, but also supplemented it with some personalized oven mitts from etsy!

Or get this for a shower then get a registry gift for the main event.

Right now, our glasses are sort of decor - but I can't wait to feature them on our new bar when it arrives!
